Washington, D.C. – Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) voiced strong support for Kash Patel, former Trump administration official and nominee to lead the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), during Patel’s confirmation hearing. In his opening statement, Grassley described Patel as a dedicated public servant with a history of “fighting unpopular but righteous causes”, while also warning that he would face “underhanded attacks” from political opponents throughout the confirmation process.
Grassley Defends Patel’s Record
Grassley, the longest-serving Republican senator and a senior member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, defended Patel’s background and work in government. Patel, a former chief investigator for the House Intelligence Committee under Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.), played a key role in uncovering alleged misconduct in the Trump-Russia investigation. He later served in various roles within the Trump administration, including as chief of staff to the acting Secretary of Defense.
“Kash Patel has dedicated his career to exposing government wrongdoing and holding officials accountable, even when it wasn’t popular,” Grassley said. “He has taken on difficult battles, and for that, he has made powerful enemies. But his commitment to the rule of law and to truth is exactly what the FBI needs right now.”
Patel has been a vocal critic of the FBI and Department of Justice (DOJ), frequently accusing them of political bias and misconduct. His nomination comes at a time of heightened scrutiny over the bureau’s handling of past investigations, particularly those involving former President Donald Trump and his allies.
Political Battle Over Patel’s Confirmation
Patel’s nomination is expected to face strong opposition from Senate Democrats, who have raised concerns over his deep ties to Trump and his past comments about the intelligence community. However, Grassley dismissed these concerns, accusing Patel’s detractors of engaging in partisan attacks.
“They know he’s a threat to the status quo, so they will do everything they can to discredit him,” Grassley said. “We need someone at the FBI who isn’t afraid to challenge abuses of power, and Kash Patel has proven time and time again that he is that person.”
