Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders confirmed on Tuesday that she does not intend to join former President Donald Trump’s team if he resumes office. Instead, Sanders, a Republican, reaffirmed her commitment to Arkansas, stating that she is focused on her gubernatorial reelection campaign.
“I’ve already announced my bid for reelection & I look forward to serving in this position for the next six years,” Sanders said, addressing her political future following a scheduled speech in Arkansas. The governor, who previously served as Trump’s White House press secretary from 2017 to 2019, has remained an outspoken supporter of the Trump administration and its policies, particularly during the 2024 presidential campaign season. However, she noted that her current role as governor and her commitment to Arkansas take precedence over a federal appointment.
Sanders’ announcement came on the heels of her father, Mike Huckabee, being appointed U.S. ambassador to Israel, also on Tuesday. The former Arkansas governor and conservative commentator was a strong advocate for Trump’s policies during both of Trump’s presidential campaigns. As a seasoned politician who served as Arkansas’s governor from 1996 to 2007, Mike Huckabee’s appointment is expected to reinforce Trump’s international strategy, particularly in regard to U.S.-Israel relations.
During her announcement, Sanders joked about her father’s new role, saying, “So unfortunately & hopefully you guys are stuck with me for awhile & the only member of my family that will be going into the administration is my dad.” She clarified that despite her father’s prominent position in Trump’s foreign policy team, she has no plans to follow suit, even with the continued alignment between her and Trump on many key conservative issues.
As Arkansas’s governor, Sanders has directed her focus toward state-based initiatives, and she emphasized her dedication to building upon her agenda within the state. Known for championing conservative policies, Sanders has advanced a platform rooted in limited government, economic reform, and local empowerment since taking office. Her decision to stay in Arkansas is seen by many as a choice to solidify her influence and impact at the state level, distancing herself from a federal appointment while maintaining support for Trump’s overall agenda.
Sanders also expressed optimism about the future of Arkansas, outlining her plans to drive economic growth, educational reform, and public safety improvements in the coming years. Her continued role as governor reinforces her ambition to carry forward her agenda without federal obligations that might divert her focus from local issues.
This decision by Sanders also highlights the evolving nature of Trump’s administration team as he potentially returns to office, with figures like Mike Huckabee taking on prominent international roles. In contrast, Sanders’ choice reflects her intention to establish a lasting legacy in Arkansas, contributing to her ongoing role as a prominent figure in Republican politics.
