USNJ Transit Train Operator Killed, 23 Injured After Light Rail Train Strikes Fallen Tree Near Trenton

Trenton, NJ — A tragic accident involving an NJ Transit River Line train left one train operator dead and nearly two dozen passengers injured after the train collided with a fallen tree near Trenton. The incident occurred on Tuesday evening, leading to the suspension of service along the River Line as authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

The incident unfolded when a large tree fell across the tracks in a wooded area, blocking the path of the southbound train. According to preliminary reports, the train struck the tree with significant force, causing the front of the train to derail. The train operator, whose name has not yet been released, died from injuries sustained in the crash.

Emergency responders quickly arrived on the scene and provided medical assistance to the injured passengers. NJ Transit officials reported that 23 people suffered various injuries, ranging from minor to moderate, and were transported to local hospitals. None of the injuries to passengers are currently believed to be life-threatening.

The collision occurred at approximately 7:45 PM, just as the train was approaching Trenton’s Cass Street station. A spokesperson for NJ Transit confirmed that the River Line service between Trenton and Camden has been suspended while crews work to clear the scene and repair the tracks.

Investigation Underway
Local law enforcement and NJ Transit officials have launched an investigation into the circumstances of the crash. The primary focus is to determine the sequence of events leading up to the train striking the tree and whether any warning systems or procedures could have helped prevent the accident.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our colleague and the injuries sustained by passengers during this tragic event,” said NJ Transit Executive Director Kevin Corbett in a statement. “Our thoughts are with the family of the operator and all those affected. We are working closely with authorities to ensure a thorough investigation.”

Witnesses reported hearing a loud noise as the train struck the tree, followed by the sounds of emergency sirens as first responders rushed to the scene. “It was really loud, and then everything just stopped suddenly,” said one passenger who was onboard during the collision. “We were all thrown forward.”

Service Disruptions and Recovery Efforts
As NJ Transit crews work to remove debris and assess the damage to the train and tracks, River Line service remains suspended. NJ Transit has arranged for substitute bus services to accommodate displaced passengers, though officials have not yet provided an estimate for when regular train service will resume.

The accident has also prompted calls for a review of safety protocols along the River Line, particularly in heavily wooded areas where fallen trees can pose a hazard to trains. This incident follows a series of weather-related disruptions in the region, as heavy rainfall and high winds have recently led to dangerous conditions.

The names of the victims and the detailed findings of the investigation will be released as more information becomes available. In the meantime, NJ Transit is urging commuters to check their website and social media updates for the latest information on service status.
