Historic Shift: For the First Time, More Americans Identify as Republicans Than Democrats

USPoliticsHistoric Shift: For the First Time, More Americans Identify as Republicans Than Democrats

For the first time ever, more Americans identify as Republicans than Democrats, according to a recent Gallup analysis. Drawing on an average of polls conducted between July and September, the report reveals that 48 percent of U.S. adults either identify with or lean toward the Republican Party, while only 45 percent do the same for the Democrats.

This shift comes just over a month before a closely contested presidential election between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris. Gallup emphasized that “party affiliation and voting are strongly predictive of individuals’ vote choices,” with most voters typically casting ballots for the candidate representing their party.

Historically, Democrats have gained the White House when their party held a lead in affiliation. For instance, in 1992, when Democrat Bill Clinton was elected, 52 percent of Americans aligned with his party, compared to 40 percent for Republicans. The gap was narrower in 2000—48 percent for Democrats and 43 percent for Republicans—when George W. Bush won the presidency for the GOP.
