The long-awaited launch of NASA’s Europa Clipper spacecraft finally took place following a delay caused by Hurricane Milton. Originally scheduled for October 10, the mission faced a setback due to the storm, but crews quickly assessed the launch facilities and cleared the spacecraft for a successful liftoff. About an hour and 10 minutes after the launch, NASA confirmed that it had received a signal from Europa Clipper, marking the beginning of communication with the spacecraft as it embarked on its mission.

Europa Clipper, the largest spacecraft NASA has ever built for a planetary mission, is on a 1.8 billion-mile journey to study Europa, an icy moon of Jupiter believed to harbor a vast subsurface ocean. Europa’s ocean, potentially holding twice the amount of liquid water as Earth’s, is buried beneath an ice shell estimated to be 10 to 15 miles thick. “The instruments work together hand in hand to answer our most pressing questions about Europa,” said Robert Pappalardo, the mission’s project scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).

Equipped with nine advanced instruments and a gravity experiment, the spacecraft aims to map Europa’s surface, study its geology, and probe the composition and structure of the ocean hidden beneath its icy shell. The mission’s advanced suite includes ice-penetrating radar, spectrometers, and a magnetometer designed to measure the depth and salinity of Europa’s ocean and assess the moon’s habitability. The spacecraft also carries a special vault made of titanium and aluminum to shield its electronics from the harsh radiation surrounding Jupiter.

During its six-year journey, Europa Clipper will conduct gravity-assist flybys of Mars and Earth to conserve fuel and gain speed. It is expected to arrive at Jupiter in April 2030, where it will begin a series of 49 flybys of Europa. Each flyby will bring the spacecraft as close as 16 miles (25 kilometers) above the moon’s surface, allowing it to gather data while minimizing exposure to Jupiter’s intense radiation.

Europa Clipper’s mission aligns with the European Space Agency’s Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (Juice), which launched in April 2023. Together, these missions aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of Jupiter and its moons, offering insights into the potential for life within Europa’s ocean. Although Clipper is not specifically designed to detect life, its findings could illuminate whether conditions for life exist on this distant moon.

Adding a personal touch to the mission, Europa Clipper carries over 2.6 million names submitted by people worldwide and a poem written by US Poet Laureate Ada Limón. The spacecraft’s successful liftoff marks the beginning of a significant chapter in the quest to understand ocean worlds beyond Earth.

“This is the start of our journey of discovery,” said Jenny Kampmeier, a science systems engineer at JPL, during the live NASA broadcast. “Everything we’re going to learn from Europa, it’s just amazing. All scientific disciplines can really gain something from this, and it’s going to change our understanding of our place in the universe if this is a world that could support life.”
