Ashton Jeanty Falls Short of Barry Sanders’ NCAA Rushing Record After Fiesta Bowl Loss

UncategorizedAshton Jeanty Falls Short of Barry Sanders' NCAA Rushing Record After Fiesta Bowl Loss

Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty’s historic season ended just shy of eclipsing Barry Sanders’ NCAA single-season rushing record. Jeanty finished the 2024 season with 2,601 rushing yards, 28 yards short of the record set by Sanders in 1988.

Jeanty needed 132 yards entering Tuesday’s College Football Playoff Fiesta Bowl quarterfinal against No. 6 Penn State to surpass Sanders’ iconic 2,628-yard mark. Despite his impressive effort throughout the game, the Broncos fell 34-27, marking the end of their playoff run and Jeanty’s pursuit of the record.

The standout junior running back expressed pride in his season despite falling short of the top spot. “It’s been an incredible journey this year,” Jeanty said postgame. “Barry Sanders is a legend, and being in the conversation with him is an honor. I couldn’t have done this without my teammates and coaches.”

Jeanty’s remarkable season was a key factor in Boise State’s success, as he consistently dominated on the ground against formidable opponents. His versatility and explosive playstyle earned him recognition as one of the top players in college football, with multiple 200-yard games to his name.

Barry Sanders’ record, set during his Heisman-winning season at Oklahoma State, has stood for 36 years and remains a benchmark of greatness. Sanders achieved his total in just 11 games, an astonishing feat that has kept his record intact even as seasons have expanded to 12 or more games for most players.

The Fiesta Bowl saw Jeanty face a tough Penn State defense, which ranks among the best in the nation. While he managed several critical runs, the Nittany Lions’ disciplined defense limited his opportunities for the explosive plays that defined much of his season.

Boise State head coach Andy Avalos praised Jeanty for his leadership and impact. “Ashton is a once-in-a-generation talent. What he’s done for this program is remarkable, and we’re proud of everything he’s accomplished,” Avalos stated.

Jeanty’s 2,601 rushing yards this season place him second in NCAA history, surpassing several other legendary seasons. His campaign included a record-breaking performance in the Mountain West Championship, where he rushed for 284 yards, cementing his legacy as one of Boise State’s all-time greats.

With the Broncos’ playoff hopes now dashed, speculation turns to Jeanty’s future. The star junior is expected to garner significant interest from NFL scouts if he declares for the draft. However, he has not yet indicated whether he plans to return for his senior season or take the leap to the professional level.

Regardless of what lies ahead, Jeanty’s contributions to Boise State and his pursuit of Sanders’ record have solidified his place in college football history. Fans and analysts alike will remember his 2024 season as one of the most electrifying performances in recent memory.
