Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the world’s largest contract chipmaker, has officially denied reports that it is in talks to build a semiconductor factory in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The rumors, sparked by a recent Wall Street Journal report, suggested that TSMC executives had visited the UAE to explore the possibility of establishing a new production facility in the country. However, TSMC clarified that it currently has no plans for such an investment.
The original reports indicated that TSMC and Samsung, two major players in the global semiconductor market, were considering expanding into the UAE due to the country’s growing interest in becoming a key player in the high-tech sector. The UAE has been actively looking to diversify its economy away from oil dependency and invest in industries like artificial intelligence, renewable energy, and semiconductors.
Although TSMC has been expanding its production footprint globally, including new facilities under construction in the U.S. and Japan, the company emphasized that the UAE is not part of its current expansion strategy. The semiconductor giant is focusing on projects that are already in progress, such as its advanced chip fabrication plants in Arizona and Kumamoto, Japan, both of which are crucial to addressing the global chip shortage.
This denial comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions, particularly between the U.S. and China, which have influenced the semiconductor industry. The U.S. has been encouraging major chipmakers to increase domestic production to reduce reliance on overseas manufacturing, particularly from China and Taiwan. TSMC’s denial may also reflect the delicate balancing act that Taiwanese companies must maintain amid these geopolitical pressures.
Samsung, which was also mentioned in the Wall Street Journal report, has not made any official comment on the matter. The South Korean tech giant is already in the process of expanding its semiconductor production capacity globally, with significant investments in the U.S. and other regions.
The rumors of TSMC’s involvement in the UAE, while now debunked, highlight the growing global interest in securing semiconductor supply chains. Many countries are investing in or seeking partnerships to ensure access to this critical technology, given its importance in various industries, including automotive, telecommunications, and consumer electronics.
For now, TSMC remains committed to its existing expansion plans, leaving the UAE’s ambitions to enter the semiconductor sector an open question for future developments.
