Week 6 College Football Rankings: Coaches Poll Top 25 Unveiled

SportsWeek 6 College Football Rankings: Coaches Poll Top 25 Unveiled

The Week 6 Coaches Poll Top 25 College Football Rankings have been released, reflecting a weekend full of surprises, upsets, and season-defining performances. As teams battle for a spot in the College Football Playoff, this week’s rankings reveal the shifting dynamics in a competitive season where every game matters.

Top Contenders Hold Steady

The top three spots remain unchanged, with the defending national champion Georgia Bulldogs continuing to dominate at No. 1. Georgia (6-0) rolled past Kentucky on Saturday, cementing their position as the nation’s top team. Head coach Kirby Smart praised his team’s defensive effort, calling it “one of our most complete performances so far.”

Right behind them, Michigan held firm at No. 2 after cruising to a win over Minnesota. The Wolverines’ balanced offensive attack and strong defense have kept them undefeated and poised for a potential showdown with rival Ohio State later this season.

Ohio State rounds out the top three, maintaining their position after a solid win against Maryland. With an efficient passing game led by quarterback Kyle McCord and a stout defensive front, the Buckeyes look every bit a playoff contender as they head into the heart of Big Ten play.

Shake-Up in the Top 10

One of the biggest stories of Week 6 was the unexpected upset of Texas by Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry. The Sooners, previously ranked No. 12, leapfrogged into the Top 10, landing at No. 7 following their thrilling 34-30 win. Quarterback Dillon Gabriel led a last-minute touchdown drive, stunning the Longhorns and making a statement for Oklahoma as a Big 12 title favorite.

Texas, previously ranked No. 4, fell to No. 10 after the loss, but remains a strong contender with plenty of opportunities to climb back into the playoff conversation. Head coach Steve Sarkisian urged his team to stay focused, saying, “This is one setback, but our goals are still within reach.”

Meanwhile, USC’s nail-biting 48-45 victory over Arizona exposed vulnerabilities in their defense, causing the Trojans to drop one spot to No. 9. Quarterback Caleb Williams continues to shine, but the defensive lapses are becoming a growing concern as they prepare for tougher matchups in the Pac-12.

Rising Teams Make Their Mark

Further down the poll, Louisville made one of the biggest jumps, climbing from No. 25 to No. 15 after a stunning 33-20 upset over Notre Dame. The Cardinals, now 6-0, are one of the biggest surprises of the season and are riding high with newfound momentum. Head coach Jeff Brohm attributed the success to a “team-first mentality” and disciplined execution on both sides of the ball.

Another notable riser is North Carolina, which moved up to No. 12 following a dominant win over Syracuse. Led by quarterback Drake Maye, the Tar Heels are quietly building a strong résumé and could be a dark horse contender in the ACC.

Teams on the Decline

Notre Dame’s loss to Louisville resulted in a significant drop from No. 11 to No. 19, as the Fighting Irish struggled to contain the Cardinals’ offense. With a 5-2 record, Notre Dame’s playoff hopes are fading, and they’ll need a strong finish to salvage the season.

LSU also took a hit, dropping out of the Top 25 entirely after a narrow victory over Missouri. Although they won the game, the Tigers’ inconsistent play and defensive issues have raised concerns about their competitiveness moving forward.

New Entries and Exits

Missouri and Kansas are the new entrants in this week’s rankings, coming in at No. 24 and No. 25, respectively. Missouri’s high-scoring affair against LSU showcased their potential, while Kansas continued its solid season with a victory over UCF.

Falling out of the rankings were Kentucky and Fresno State, both of whom suffered losses in Week 6. Kentucky’s drop came after a blowout loss to Georgia, while Fresno State was upset by Wyoming, ending their undefeated run.

Top 10 Teams in the Week 6 Coaches Poll:

  1. 1. Georgia (6-0)
    • 2. Michigan (6-0)
      • 3. Ohio State (6-0)
        • 4. Florida State (5-0)
          • 5. Penn State (5-0)
            • 6. Washington (5-0)
              • 7. Oklahoma (6-0)
                • 8. Oregon (5-0)
                  • 9. USC (6-0)
  2. 10. Texas (5-1)

As the season progresses, the Coaches Poll Top 25 will continue to reflect the highs and lows of the nation’s best teams. With critical matchups looming in Week 7, college football fans can expect more drama, upsets, and shifts in the rankings in the weeks to come.
