Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins remains optimistic about returning to action in Sunday’s matchup against the Denver Broncos. Higgins, who has been dealing with a nagging hamstring injury, participated in limited practices this week and is hopeful to make his first appearance since Week 9.
Hamstring Injury Timeline
Higgins initially suffered the injury during a practice session ahead of the Bengals’ Week 10 game against the Houston Texans. The setback forced him to miss four consecutive games, leaving the team without one of its primary offensive weapons. His absence has been particularly challenging as the Bengals navigate the remainder of the season without starting quarterback Joe Burrow, who is out due to a wrist injury.
The Bengals’ coaching staff has been cautious in managing Higgins’ recovery, aiming to avoid further aggravation. Speaking to reporters this week, head coach Zac Taylor noted, “We’re taking it day by day with Tee. He’s progressing well, but we’ll make a final decision closer to game time.”
Higgins’ Optimism
Higgins himself expressed confidence in his potential return during a media session on Friday. “I feel good. I’ve been working hard with the trainers to get back to 100%. Hopefully, everything lines up for me to be out there on Sunday,” Higgins said.
The Bengals’ star wideout has been a key component of the team’s offense since being drafted in 2020. This season, Higgins has recorded 31 receptions for 380 yards and two touchdowns, though his numbers have been limited due to injuries. His return could provide a significant boost to a Bengals team that has struggled offensively in recent weeks.
Impact on the Bengals Offense
Without Higgins, the Bengals have leaned heavily on Ja’Marr Chase, who has continued to deliver as the team’s top receiving threat. However, opposing defenses have frequently double-teamed Chase in Higgins’ absence, limiting his ability to dominate. The return of Higgins would force defenses to adjust, potentially opening up opportunities for other playmakers like Tyler Boyd and rookie wide receiver Andrei Iosivas.
Backup quarterback Jake Browning, who has stepped into the starting role since Burrow’s season-ending injury, could also benefit from Higgins’ presence. Browning delivered a career-best performance in Week 13, throwing for 354 yards and a touchdown in the Bengals’ overtime win against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Adding Higgins back into the lineup could provide Browning with a reliable target, particularly in crucial third-down and red-zone situations.
Sunday’s Matchup
The Bengals (6-6) face a critical road test against the Broncos (6-6) as both teams fight to keep their playoff hopes alive in the competitive AFC. Denver’s defense, led by standout cornerback Patrick Surtain II, has been solid in recent weeks, making Higgins’ return even more crucial for Cincinnati’s game plan.
Taylor emphasized the importance of having all hands on deck for Sunday’s game. “Every game is a playoff game for us at this point. We need all our guys healthy and ready to contribute,” he said.
The Bengals are expected to make a final decision on Higgins’ status after Saturday’s walkthrough. If he is cleared to play, it will mark a much-needed boost for Cincinnati as they look to stay in the postseason hunt.
