Adrian Wojnarowski, the renowned NBA insider for ESPN, is retiring from his distinguished career in sports journalism to take on a new role as General Manager of the St. Bonaventure men’s basketball program. Wojnarowski, a member of St. Bonaventure’s Class of 1991, is making a return to his alma mater to support its elite Atlantic 10 basketball team.
“I’m thrilled and humbled to return to St. Bonaventure with the opportunity to serve the university, Coach Mark Schmidt, and our basketball program,” said Wojnarowski. “In these transformative times for college sports, I’m eager to contribute to a championship program that balances high-level basketball, national television exposure, pro preparation, and NIL opportunities.”
As General Manager, Wojnarowski will take on various responsibilities, including managing NIL opportunities for players, handling relationships with collectives, overseeing the transfer portal, and strengthening player-alumni connections. His role also extends to professional player programs and fundraising efforts for the basketball team.
St. Bonaventure is following a growing trend of collegiate programs establishing General Manager positions, especially within their football and men’s basketball teams, to address the rapidly changing landscape of college athletics, which now includes NIL and transfer portal challenges. Wojnarowski’s extensive network of relationships within the NBA and collegiate basketball will be a significant asset to the program.
A Major Addition to the Bonnies Program
Bob Beretta, St. Bonaventure’s Vice President and Director of Athletics, emphasized that Wojnarowski’s decision to join the university is a major win for the athletic department.
“Adrian’s deep connections and unmatched expertise will give our program an edge,” Beretta said. “This is a bold move that positions St. Bonaventure at the forefront of change in college athletics. We are making a strong statement about our commitment to excellence.”
Mark Schmidt, the head coach of the men’s basketball team and the winningest coach in school history, called Wojnarowski’s addition a “home run.” Schmidt said Wojnarowski’s involvement would be crucial in navigating the challenges of NIL and player recruitment while helping the program remain competitive in the Atlantic 10.
“Woj’s network within basketball is second to none, and having him on board is going to be a game-changer for our program,” Schmidt added.
A Legacy in Journalism
Wojnarowski’s decision to leave ESPN marks the end of an iconic career in sports media. Widely regarded as one of the top NBA reporters in the world, he has been a fixture at ESPN since 2017 and previously worked for Yahoo Sports, where he helped build The Vertical. His career began in local newspapers, and he has earned numerous accolades, including being named the National Sports Media Association’s National Sportswriter of the Year three times (2017-2019).
Wojnarowski and his wife, Amy, both have deep ties to St. Bonaventure, where they met as students. They have been significant supporters of both the basketball program and the university’s journalism school. A press conference to officially welcome the couple back to the campus will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 25, at 4 p.m. in the Quick Center for the Arts.
Wojnarowski expressed his excitement about the opportunity to give back to the university that shaped his life and career. “This place means the world to Amy and me. I’m ready to get started,” he said.
