Kirby Smart Faces Criticism After Risky Call Leads to Fumble and Notre Dame Touchdown

SportsKirby Smart Faces Criticism After Risky Call Leads to Fumble and Notre Dame Touchdown

New Orleans — Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart is under fire following a risky decision to pass the ball late in the first half of the Sugar Bowl against Notre Dame on Thursday, January 2, 2025, a move that ultimately backfired and cost the Bulldogs valuable points.

At halftime, Georgia trailed 13-3, with their momentum damaged by a series of unfortunate events. After Notre Dame extended their lead to 6-3 with a field goal in the final minute, Smart opted to push for more points instead of running out the clock. The decision to stay aggressive, however, did not pay off.

On Georgia’s first play following the Notre Dame field goal, freshman quarterback Gunner Stockton fumbled the ball, and Notre Dame quickly recovered. The Fighting Irish capitalized on the turnover, scoring a touchdown on the very next play to extend their lead to 13-3 as the teams headed to halftime.

Smart addressed the controversial decision during his brief halftime interview with ESPN, admitting regret over the choice.

“We tried to be aggressive in 2-minute and probably regret it — should’ve gone to the half 6-3,” Smart said. “We wanted to show confidence in our quarterback and let him go play. We didn’t get the block we needed to get, and they made a good play.”

Despite Smart’s explanation, the decision quickly became a topic of debate across social media, where Georgia fans and neutral observers voiced their criticism. Many pointed out the missed opportunity to take a more conservative approach and go into the break with only a 6-3 deficit.

The decision also drew scrutiny for the Bulldogs’ overall performance in the first half, particularly their struggles on offense. Several fans questioned Smart’s strategy and whether his aggressive approach contributed to Georgia’s lackluster output.

As the second half progresses, Georgia will need to recover from the turnover and rally to avoid a Sugar Bowl defeat to Notre Dame, who seized control of the game with the timely touchdown.
