Central Michigan University football coach Jim McElwain announced on Wednesday that he will retire at the end of the current season, concluding a remarkable 40-year career in the sport. McElwain, who has also served as head coach at Florida and Colorado State, reflected on his journey in a heartfelt statement.

“My wife Karen and I have cherished every moment of our football journey,” McElwain said. “We want to express our deepest gratitude to all the players who have welcomed us into their lives, and the incredible coaches and support staff at every stop along the way—it has been a true privilege to work alongside all of them. The lifelong friendships that were created mean the world to us.”

Career Highlights and Contributions

McElwain, 62, joined Central Michigan in 2019, amassing a 33-35 record over five seasons, including a 4-7 mark this year. He led the Chippewas to two bowl appearances, with the team’s most successful season in 2021, when they secured nine victories and triumphed over Washington State in the Sun Bowl.

Prior to his tenure at Central Michigan, McElwain made notable contributions to other programs. At Colorado State, he compiled a 22-16 record across three seasons. His stint at Florida included two appearances in the SEC Championship game, though his tenure ended prematurely in 2017 amid controversy following claims of death threats. Before his head coaching roles, McElwain served as offensive coordinator under Nick Saban at Alabama, helping the Crimson Tide secure national championships in 2009 and 2011.

McElwain’s overall head coaching record stands at 77-63.

Challenges and Controversy

McElwain’s retirement comes amid reports of his involvement in an NCAA investigation related to the Connor Stalions allegations, which pertain to scouting practices during the 2023 season opener at Michigan State. Sources told ESPN that McElwain’s decision to step away was self-determined and unrelated to the investigation.

Despite these challenges, McElwain emphasized his fondness for Central Michigan, stating, “We are especially thankful for our time at CMU. Mount Pleasant and the CMU community hold a special place in our hearts, and we look forward to continuing to be a part of this program and this great community.”

Legacy and Future

McElwain leaves behind a legacy of resilience and adaptability, navigating the highs and lows of a long coaching career. His ability to rebuild programs and lead teams to success will be remembered, particularly his pivotal role in shaping young athletes and building competitive football programs.

McElwain has indicated plans to remain connected to Central Michigan in some capacity, ensuring his impact on the program and the broader football community endures beyond his coaching days.

The Chippewas will play their final game of the season on Nov. 30 against Northern Illinois, marking the close of a storied career for Jim McElwain.
