Holders Leverkusen Knock 10-Man Bayern Out of German Cup

SportsHolders Leverkusen Knock 10-Man Bayern Out of German Cup

Bayer Leverkusen continued their strong form in the German Cup, edging out Bayern Munich 1-0 in a tense round-of-16 clash on Wednesday night. Nathan Tella’s second-half goal proved decisive as the defending champions booked their place in the quarter-finals.

Neuer’s Red Card Changes the Game

The match at the BayArena was turned on its head early when Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer received a straight red card in the 17th minute. The veteran rushed off his line to challenge Jeremie Frimpong but miscalculated, colliding with the Leverkusen attacker just outside the box. Bayern, already without injured star striker Harry Kane, were forced to play the remainder of the match with 10 men.

Despite their numerical advantage, Leverkusen struggled to capitalize early, with Bayern’s defense standing firm and substitute goalkeeper Daniel Peretz making key saves.

Tella Breaks the Deadlock

Leverkusen finally broke through in the 69th minute. Alex Grimaldo delivered a pinpoint cross into the penalty area, which Nathan Tella met with a first-time finish, sending the ball past Peretz to give the hosts a well-deserved lead. Tella, a former Burnley and Southampton forward, continues to thrive under Xabi Alonso’s leadership.

Bayern’s Missed Opportunities

Bayern pushed hard for an equalizer despite being a man down. Defender Dayot Upamecano came closest, with his header narrowly missing the far post. Kingsley Coman and Kim Min-jae also squandered chances, with neither able to test Leverkusen goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky.

Joshua Kimmich’s delivery from set pieces provided Bayern with some opportunities, but the visitors lacked the clinical edge to find the back of the net.

Leverkusen’s Cup Dominance Continues

The victory extends Xabi Alonso’s perfect record in the German Cup to eight wins, as his side aims to defend the trophy they won last season. Bayern, meanwhile, have now gone three years without a German Cup title, last lifting the trophy in 2020.

With this win, Leverkusen continue to assert their dominance under Alonso’s guidance, while Bayern will be left to reflect on missed chances and their captain’s costly mistake.
