Cleveland Browns Add QB Bailey Zappe After Watson Injury, Thompson-Robinson Uncertainty

SportsNFLCleveland Browns Add QB Bailey Zappe After Watson Injury, Thompson-Robinson Uncertainty

The Cleveland Browns are making another adjustment to their quarterback roster as they navigate a season plagued by injuries. With starting quarterback Deshaun Watson out for the season due to a ruptured Achilles tendon and backup Dorian Thompson-Robinson nursing a finger injury on his throwing hand, the Browns have signed quarterback Bailey Zappe from the Kansas City Chiefs’ practice squad.

Zappe, 25, previously started eight games over two seasons with the New England Patriots. After being released by the Patriots during the summer, he signed with the Chiefs’ practice squad. Now, he joins a Browns team in need of quarterback depth, providing insurance behind Thompson-Robinson and Jameis Winston, who is expected to start this week against the Baltimore Ravens if Thompson-Robinson remains sidelined.

The latest injury to Thompson-Robinson adds to the Browns’ challenges. The rookie quarterback was elevated to the No. 2 spot on the depth chart and saw action in the Browns’ recent game. He completed 11 of 24 passes for 82 yards, but threw two interceptions before leaving the field with the injury.

Head coach Kevin Stefanski addressed the situation on Monday, stating that he was still awaiting more medical information on Thompson-Robinson’s status. “We’re going to monitor Dorian’s progress and see where he is at throughout the week,” Stefanski said. “It’s a tough situation, but we believe in our guys, and Bailey gives us more depth at the position.”

The addition of Zappe offers the Browns a much-needed option as they look to stabilize their quarterback rotation. While he has limited NFL experience, Zappe has demonstrated potential, stepping in for the Patriots during critical games over the past two seasons. His arrival comes at a crucial time for Cleveland, who are trying to remain competitive in the AFC North.

With the team set to face the Baltimore Ravens this week, all eyes will be on who takes the field under center. Jameis Winston, who was recently brought into the fold, may have the edge to start if Thompson-Robinson isn’t ready to go. However, Zappe’s signing gives the Browns another viable option, depending on how the practice week unfolds.

For Cleveland, the constant shuffling of quarterbacks this season has been a challenge, with Watson’s season-ending injury being the latest major blow. The team had high hopes for Watson to lead them deep into the playoffs, but now they will have to adjust their plans and hope that their new additions can keep them in the playoff hunt.

The Browns’ decision to sign Zappe reflects a commitment to staying prepared amidst their injury challenges, showing the organization’s determination to find stability at the quarterback position. As they continue to fight for a playoff spot in a competitive division, the Browns will rely on their coaching staff and new arrivals like Zappe to adapt quickly and provide the team with the best chance to compete week after week.
