Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over SC Freiburg on matchday 19, extending their lead at the top of the table to six points over second-placed Bayer Leverkusen. Goals from Harry Kane and Min-Jae Kim proved decisive, despite a late push from Freiburg that kept the game tense until the final whistle.
Kane’s Early Strike Sets the Tone
Bayern began the match with confidence, controlling possession and dictating the pace of play. With five changes to the lineup following their 0-3 Champions League defeat to Feyenoord Rotterdam earlier in the week, the Munich side appeared focused on maintaining their Bundesliga dominance.
The first major chance came in the 13th minute when Jamal Musiala unleashed an 18-meter shot that struck the post. Just two minutes later, Bayern’s star striker Harry Kane delivered a crucial breakthrough. Receiving a pass from the right, Kane deftly turned past Philipp Lienhart and fired a powerful shot from 14 meters out, clocked at 121 km/h. Freiburg goalkeeper Noah Atubolu had no chance to react, giving Bayern a 1-0 lead.
Setback with Goretzka’s Injury
The first half concluded with Bayern in control, though a setback came when midfielder Leon Goretzka was forced off in the 40th minute with a thigh injury. Freiburg, on the other hand, struggled to make an impact, failing to register a single shot on goal in the opening 45 minutes.
Kim Doubles the Lead
The second half began much like the first, with Bayern dictating the tempo. In the 54th minute, Min-Jae Kim extended Bayern’s lead. Rising above the defense during a corner, Kim headed the ball past Atubolu to make it 2-0, seemingly putting the game out of reach.
Freiburg’s Late Rally
Freiburg, however, found a spark after Lucas Höler registered their first shot on goal in the 65th minute. Three minutes later, substitute Matthias Ginter reduced the deficit with a clever header off a corner, energizing both his teammates and the home crowd.
Despite Freiburg’s renewed energy and increased pressure in the final minutes, Bayern’s defense held firm, ensuring they walked away with all three points.
Next Steps for Both Teams
Bayern Munich now turns its attention to a crucial Champions League clash against Slovan Bratislava, where they will fight for a slim chance at direct qualification to the round of 16. Following that, they face Holstein Kiel and Werder Bremen in back-to-back Bundesliga home matches.
Meanwhile, SC Freiburg will aim to bounce back when they visit VfL Bochum, the league’s bottom club, on matchday 20.
