Yu Shang Food Recalls Meat and Poultry Products Amid Deadly Listeria Outbreak

HealthYu Shang Food Recalls Meat and Poultry Products Amid Deadly Listeria Outbreak

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has announced a nationwide recall of ready-to-eat meat and poultry products from Yu Shang Food following a deadly listeria outbreak linked to its products. The outbreak has resulted in 11 confirmed infections and one infant death, prompting urgent public health action.

Products and Risks

The recall involves several Yu Shang Food items, including beef shank, chicken feet, and other ready-to-eat meat products. The affected items were distributed nationwide, and consumers are urged to check their refrigerators for products bearing the Yu Shang brand.

The CDC confirmed that listeria monocytogenes, a harmful bacterium, was detected in samples of the recalled products. Listeria can cause severe illness, particularly in pregnant individuals, newborns, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.

The Outbreak

The CDC began investigating the outbreak after reports of severe illness emerged from multiple states. Among the 11 infections, all required hospitalization, and tragically, one infant has died.

Health officials traced the source of contamination to a Yu Shang production facility. The company has since halted production and is cooperating with federal authorities to address the issue.

Consumer Guidance

The CDC has urged consumers to discard any Yu Shang Food items they may have purchased, even if no illness has occurred. Retailers have been directed to remove the products from shelves.

Symptoms of listeria infection include fever, muscle aches, nausea, and diarrhea. In severe cases, the infection can spread to the nervous system, causing meningitis. Pregnant individuals should be especially vigilant, as listeria can result in miscarriage, stillbirth, or severe infection in newborns.

Company Response

Yu Shang Food released a statement expressing condolences to the victims and their families, stating, “We take food safety seriously and are working closely with the CDC and USDA to identify and resolve this issue.”

Ongoing Investigation

The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is conducting a thorough review of Yu Shang’s facilities to ensure compliance with food safety standards. Additional recalls could be issued as the investigation progresses.

What’s Next

Health officials urge anyone who has consumed Yu Shang products and experiences symptoms of listeria to seek medical attention immediately. For updates on the recall and outbreak, consumers can visit the CDC and FSIS websites.

This outbreak highlights the critical importance of food safety measures and the need for stringent oversight in food production.
