Fast NewsRemembering the Edmund Fitzgerald: 49 Years Since the Tragic Journey

New Radio Play and Memorial Events Honor the Lost Crew

Today marks 49 years since the fateful journey of the Edmund Fitzgerald, the massive freighter that sank on Lake Superior on November 10, 1975, taking all 29 crew members with it. In a new and heartfelt tribute, friends and supporters of the crew have created a radio play that captures the poignancy of the tragedy, bringing the story to life in hopes of securing a broadcast slot in time for the 50th anniversary next year.

New Radio Play Tells the Story of Loss and Legacy

The radio play, crafted by close friends and admirers of the Edmund Fitzgerald crew — many now in their 70s and 80s — delves into the final hours of the vessel’s journey. Through personal recollections and stirring dramatizations, the production aims to evoke the emotional weight of the tragedy that has lingered in the hearts of many for nearly five decades. The play’s creators, some of whom are recovering alcoholics, see this as an opportunity to honor their late friends and share the story with new generations.

Memorial Events Set to Commemorate the Crew

In addition to the radio play, a memorial ceremony is planned to take place at the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum at Whitefish Point, Michigan, close to where the ship went down. The annual tradition includes reading the names of the lost crew members, tolling the ship’s bell 29 times, and honoring the profound loss experienced by the maritime community and the crew’s families.

Legacy of the Edmund Fitzgerald Lives On

The tale of the Edmund Fitzgerald remains a significant part of Great Lakes lore, immortalized by the Gordon Lightfoot song, “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald,” and continues to be a subject of remembrance, particularly as the 50th anniversary approaches. Both the new radio play and the memorial events reflect the enduring legacy of the ship and its crew, offering a way for the public to engage with a piece of maritime history marked by courage, mystery, and heartbreak.
