Journalist Taylor Lorenz sparked outrage during an interview on Piers Morgan’s show Monday, where she made controversial remarks about the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Lorenz told Morgan she felt “joy” upon learning Thompson had been shot, a comment that quickly drew sharp criticism from Morgan and fellow panelist Tomi Lahren.
Heated Exchange on Air
Thompson was fatally shot outside the Midtown Hilton Hotel in New York City last Wednesday. A suspect was apprehended on Monday at an Altoona, Pennsylvania, McDonald’s, but the motive behind the killing remains unclear.
When asked by Morgan to clarify her reaction, Lorenz said, “I do believe in the sanctity of life, and I think that’s why I felt, along with so many other Americans, joy, unfortunately. Maybe not joy, but certainly not empathy.”
Her remarks stunned Morgan, who fired back, “Why the f— are you laughing at this man’s death? A bloke’s been murdered in the street. I don’t find it funny at all.”
Lorenz Defends Her Position
Lorenz defended her stance, arguing that the healthcare system has caused immense harm to countless Americans. “So are the tens of thousands of Americans that he murdered!” she exclaimed, referring to policies she believes deny critical care to vulnerable people.
She later tempered her words, stating, “It feels like justice in this system when somebody responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands of Americans suffers the same fate as tens of thousands of Americans.”
Lahren Joins the Criticism
Conservative commentator Tomi Lahren, also on the panel, criticized Lorenz for her lack of empathy. “You went too far, Taylor. Saying you don’t feel empathy for this man diminishes your argument and alienates people who might otherwise agree with your criticism of the healthcare system,” Lahren said.
Lorenz laughed at Lahren’s critique, prompting Morgan to question her demeanor further. “Taylor, I don’t mean to be rude, but why the f— are you laughing all the time? I find it unbelievable! What are you laughing at?”
Lorenz replied, “I’m laughing at Tomi’s insane mischaracterization of why people are angry. The majority of America is united on this. We do not think this healthcare system, which is murdering thousands of innocent Americans, is acceptable.”
Public Backlash
The interview has ignited a fierce debate on social media, with many criticizing Lorenz for her comments and perceived insensitivity. Others, however, have voiced support for her broader critique of the for-profit healthcare system.
Thompson’s death has drawn attention to the heated tensions surrounding healthcare in the U.S. While some sympathize with Lorenz’s frustrations, many argue that her comments were inappropriate given the tragic nature of the incident.
A Divisive Moment
As the conversation around Thompson’s murder and the state of American healthcare continues, Lorenz’s remarks have underscored the polarizing nature of the debate. Morgan concluded the segment by reiterating his disapproval of Lorenz’s comments. “This isn’t about the healthcare system anymore; it’s about basic human decency,” he said.
