Joe Manchin Opposes Kamala Harris’ Call to End Filibuster for Abortion Rights

Fast NewsJoe Manchin Opposes Kamala Harris’ Call to End Filibuster for Abortion Rights

Senator Joe Manchin has made it clear that he opposes Vice President Kamala Harris’ push to eliminate the Senate filibuster to restore abortion rights. Harris, who is focusing her 2024 presidential campaign on reproductive freedom, recently told Wisconsin Public Radio (WPR) that the 60-vote threshold in the Senate should be abolished to ensure the protection of abortion rights nationwide.

What Is the Filibuster?

The filibuster is a procedural rule in the U.S. Senate that requires a supermajority of 60 votes to pass most legislation. This allows a minority of senators to block bills unless there is significant bipartisan support. Over the years, it has been both a tool for preventing rash legislation and a roadblock to passing key issues like voting rights, healthcare, and in this case, abortion rights.

Kamala Harris’ Position on the Filibuster

On her fourth campaign visit to Wisconsin, Kamala Harris appeared on WPR’s Wisconsin Today and emphasized the need to end the filibuster to protect access to abortion, which has been under attack since the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. Harris argued that without the filibuster, it would be easier to pass federal legislation safeguarding abortion rights.

“We cannot allow the filibuster to stand in the way of reproductive freedom,” Harris said during her interview. She urged Democrats to rally behind eliminating the 60-vote requirement to ensure that laws protecting women’s healthcare rights can be enacted.

Joe Manchin’s Response

However, Joe Manchin, a moderate Democrat from West Virginia, has pushed back against Harris’ stance. Manchin has long defended the filibuster as a way to preserve bipartisanship and prevent one party from steamrolling the opposition. His reluctance to support its removal has made him a pivotal figure in the Senate, where Democrats hold a slim majority.

“I won’t endorse anyone who supports eliminating the filibuster,” Manchin said in response to Harris’ comments. “The filibuster is there to ensure that our democracy works as it should, that major changes are made with broad consensus, not by the whims of the majority party.”

Manchin’s opposition reflects the deep divide within the Democratic Party over the filibuster. While progressive Democrats want to eliminate it to pass critical legislation, moderates like Manchin see it as essential to preventing extreme swings in policy.

The Filibuster and Abortion Rights

The filibuster has emerged as a key obstacle in the fight over abortion rights in the post-Roe era. In the wake of the Supreme Court’s ruling, many states have passed restrictive abortion laws, prompting calls for federal action. However, without 60 votes in the Senate, efforts to codify Roe v. Wade into law have stalled.

Harris and other Democratic leaders believe that eliminating the filibuster is the only way to secure reproductive rights for women across the country. For now, though, with figures like Manchin standing in the way, the path forward remains uncertain.

Looking Ahead

As the 2024 presidential campaign unfolds, the debate over the filibuster is likely to intensify. Harris has made abortion rights a central issue in her platform, while Joe Manchin’s opposition reflects the challenges that Democrats face in enacting their agenda without full party unity.

The future of abortion rights, the filibuster, and the balance of power in the Senate will be key issues as the election draws nearer. Whether the party can reconcile these differences may determine the success of Harris’ push for reproductive freedom in the U.S.
