Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States and a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, has passed away at the age of 100. Known for his dedication to diplomacy, human rights, and humanitarian efforts, Carter leaves behind a legacy that transcends his time in the Oval Office.

Carter died peacefully at his home in Plains, Georgia, surrounded by his family, according to a statement from The Carter Center. He had been in hospice care since February 2023 after a series of health challenges, including cancer and repeated hospitalizations. His remarkable longevity and public service made him one of the most admired figures in American politics.

Born on October 1, 1924, in Plains, Carter grew up in a farming family and later graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1946. He served as a naval officer before returning to Georgia to manage his family’s peanut business. Carter entered politics in the 1960s, serving in the Georgia State Senate and later as the state’s governor from 1971 to 1975.

In 1976, Carter rose to national prominence, winning the Democratic presidential nomination and defeating incumbent President Gerald Ford. His presidency, from 1977 to 1981, was marked by significant achievements, including the Camp David Accords, which brokered peace between Egypt and Israel, and the establishment of the Department of Energy and the Department of Education. However, his term was also challenged by economic issues and the Iran hostage crisis, which contributed to his loss to Ronald Reagan in the 1980 election.

After leaving office, Carter devoted himself to humanitarian work, founding The Carter Center in 1982. The organization focused on advancing democracy, eradicating diseases, and resolving global conflicts. Carter also became an accomplished author, penning over 30 books on topics ranging from faith to public policy.

In 2002, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in fostering peace and advancing human rights. He also remained active in Habitat for Humanity, building homes for those in need well into his 90s.

“Jimmy Carter showed us what it means to live a life of purpose,” President Joe Biden said in a statement. “His vision for peace and his tireless commitment to justice have inspired generations of Americans and people around the world.”

Carter’s passing marks the end of an era, as he was the oldest living former U.S. president and the longest-living president in American history. He is survived by his wife, Rosalynn Carter, to whom he was married for 77 years, their four children, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced, but Carter will be remembered as a man who dedicated his life to serving others, both in and out of public office.
