The Earth is edging closer to catastrophe, according to the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, which moved its symbolic “Doomsday Clock” to 89 seconds to midnight on Tuesday. This is the closest the clock has ever been to symbolizing humanity’s potential annihilation since its creation in 1947.
The decision reflects escalating threats, including climate change, the proliferation of nuclear weapons, ongoing instability in the Middle East, the persistent threat of pandemics, and the growing incorporation of artificial intelligence in military operations. The clock had previously been set at 90 seconds to midnight for the last two years.
“When you are at this precipice, the one thing you don’t want to do is take a step forward,” said Daniel Holz, chair of the group’s science and security board, as he emphasized the gravity of the decision.
Nuclear Threats on the Rise
One of the primary concerns driving the adjustment is the increasing cooperation between nations such as Russia, North Korea, and China in advancing nuclear programs. The Bulletin specifically highlighted Russian President Vladimir Putin’s threats to use nuclear weapons in the ongoing conflict with Ukraine, calling his rhetoric deeply troubling.
“A lot of the rhetoric is very disturbing,” Holz noted. “There is this growing sense that … some nation might end up using nuclear weapons, and that’s terrifying.”
The Bulletin warned that the risk of nuclear escalation is at its highest since the Cold War, with tensions between major world powers exacerbating global instability.
Climate Change and AI Add to the Danger
The group also cited the worsening impacts of climate change, including extreme weather events and rising sea levels, as a significant driver of the decision. The lack of international cooperation to combat these challenges has only intensified concerns.
Artificial intelligence was another focal point, particularly its application in military operations. The growing reliance on AI in decision-making and warfare has sparked fears of unintended consequences, with potentially catastrophic outcomes.
A Call for Action
The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, founded by scientists involved in the Manhattan Project, has used the Doomsday Clock for over seven decades as a metaphorical gauge of how close humanity is to self-destruction. The time is adjusted annually based on global threats.
This year’s adjustment serves as a stark reminder of the pressing need for international collaboration to address the world’s most urgent crises. Holz and his colleagues called for immediate action to prevent humanity from crossing a point of no return.
“The Doomsday Clock is sounding an alarm for all of humanity,” Holz said. “We must act together to turn back the hands of time.”
