San Diego, CA – The Border 2 Fire, which erupted near Otay Mountain along the U.S.-Mexico border, has rapidly expanded, burning more than 4,000 acres as of Saturday morning. The wildfire, fueled by dry conditions and gusty winds, has prompted evacuation warnings and orders in parts of Chula Vista and Otay Mesa.

Fire Progress and Containment Efforts

The fire broke out late Friday near Otay Mountain Truck Trail, quickly spreading through rugged terrain. Cal Fire San Diego has deployed over 300 firefighters, supported by air tankers and helicopters, to combat the flames. As of the latest update, the fire is 15% contained, but officials warn that shifting winds could complicate efforts.

“We are prioritizing protecting lives and structures while working to establish containment lines,” said Cal Fire Chief Tony Mecham during a press briefing.

Evacuations and Warnings

Mandatory evacuation orders have been issued for communities near the fire’s perimeter, including parts of Otay Mesa. Residents in Chula Vista and surrounding areas have been advised to prepare for potential evacuation as conditions remain unpredictable.

Emergency shelters have been set up at the Southwestern College Gymnasium in Chula Vista, providing temporary refuge for displaced families.

Impact on San Diego County

The Border 2 Fire is one of several wildfires burning in San Diego County. Smaller blazes, including the Gilman Fire near La Jolla and a separate fire along Gilman Drive, have been contained but stretched local firefighting resources thin.

“We are dealing with multiple fires across the county, making resource allocation critical,” said San Diego Fire-Rescue spokesperson Monica Muñoz.

Air Quality and Safety Precautions

The fire has significantly impacted air quality in southern San Diego County, with smoke visible from downtown San Diego to La Jolla. Officials are urging residents to stay indoors and avoid outdoor activities if they are in areas affected by smoke.

Border Impacts

The proximity of the fire to the U.S.-Mexico border has also caused delays at border crossings, with U.S. Customs and Border Protection temporarily closing certain lanes at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry.

California Wildfire Season

The Border 2 Fire highlights the challenges of California’s ongoing wildfire season. Dry vegetation, high temperatures, and Santa Ana winds have created conditions ripe for wildfires throughout the state.
