President Joe Biden honored 19 individuals with the Presidential Medal of Freedom on January 4, 2025, recognizing their contributions across various fields, including politics, activism, sports, and the arts. Among this year’s honorees were Hillary Clinton, former Secretary of State and First Lady, and billionaire philanthropist George Soros.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian award, is given to those who have made “especially meritorious contributions” to the United States’ cultural, political, or societal advancement.

Hillary Clinton: A Lifetime of Public Service

Clinton, who has spent decades in public service as a lawyer, senator, Secretary of State, and the first woman nominated for president by a major political party, was recognized for her commitment to diplomacy and human rights.

In her acceptance speech, Clinton said:
“This honor reflects the tireless work of so many who believe in the power of democracy and the strength of our shared values. I accept this not just for myself but for everyone fighting for a better tomorrow.”

George Soros: Champion of Democracy

George Soros, a financier and philanthropist, was celebrated for his global efforts to promote democracy, human rights, and freedom of expression. Soros, who founded the Open Society Foundations, has spent billions supporting progressive causes and marginalized communities worldwide.

Biden praised Soros during the ceremony, saying:
“George has been a relentless advocate for freedom and democracy, ensuring that voices of the oppressed are heard around the world.”

A Star-Studded List of Honorees

The 2025 recipients represent a diverse array of fields and accomplishments:

  • Meryl Streep, iconic actress and three-time Academy Award winner, for her contributions to the arts.
  • LeBron James, NBA superstar and philanthropist, for his impact on sports and community empowerment.
  • Dolores Huerta, labor leader and civil rights activist, for her advocacy for workers’ rights and social justice.

Other honorees included renowned scientist Dr. Anthony Fauci, poet Amanda Gorman, and veteran journalist Lesley Stahl.

Bipartisan Recognition

The ceremony highlighted the bipartisan nature of the Medal of Freedom. Republican Senator Mitt Romney also received the honor for his integrity and leadership, particularly during times of political division.

A Celebration of Unity and Achievement

Speaking at the White House, President Biden emphasized the importance of recognizing those who embody the spirit of the award:
“These individuals remind us of what we can achieve when we strive for a common purpose. They inspire us to do better, be better, and build a better nation for all.”

The event, held in the East Room, featured moving tributes and performances, showcasing the extraordinary achievements of the honorees. The Medal of Freedom remains a testament to the enduring contributions of those who shape and strengthen the United States.
