Coventry, Vermont — Authorities have revealed new details about the suspects involved in the fatal shooting of U.S. Border Patrol Agent David Maland during a traffic stop on January 20, 2025. Teresa Youngblut, 21, from Washington state, and Felix Baukholt, a 23-year-old German national, were under surveillance for days before the tragic incident.
The pair had reportedly drawn attention after being spotted in tactical gear and displaying suspicious behavior in a Walmart parking lot in Newport, Vermont. According to officials, they were observed wrapping cellphones in aluminum foil—a known tactic to evade electronic tracking.
During the traffic stop on Interstate 91, Youngblut allegedly opened fire on Agent Maland, who succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Baukholt, armed and attempting to draw his weapon, was shot by responding officers and later died.
Arsenal Found in Vehicle
A search of the suspects’ vehicle uncovered an alarming cache of items, including multiple firearms, ammunition, night vision goggles, a ballistic helmet, and electronic devices. Officials described the collection as an “arsenal of weapons” suggesting the pair may have been preparing for a larger confrontation.
Federal Charges Filed
Youngblut has been charged with assaulting a federal officer and discharging a firearm during the assault. If convicted, she faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years and could receive life in prison.
Ongoing Investigation
Federal and local authorities are investigating the suspects’ motives, with no clear indication yet of why they were in Vermont or targeting law enforcement.
Remembering Agent Maland
Agent David Maland, a Minnesota native and U.S. Air Force veteran, was remembered by colleagues and community members as a dedicated public servant who made the ultimate sacrifice. Acting U.S. Attorney Michael P. Drescher stated, “This tragic incident highlights the dangers faced daily by law enforcement officers as they protect our communities and country.”
Youngblut remains in federal custody and is presumed innocent until proven guilty. The investigation continues, with officials working to piece together the suspects’ activities leading up to the shooting.
