CrimeSuspect in Manhattan Stabbing Spree Charged with Serial Killer Murder

A 51-year-old man, identified as Ramon Rivera, has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder as a serial killer following a stabbing spree in Manhattan that left two men and one woman dead. Authorities believe Rivera, who was arrested Monday, suffers from severe mental health challenges.

The attacks began early Monday morning when 36-year-old construction worker Angel Lata Landi was fatally stabbed at 444 West 19th Street just before 8:30 a.m. Landi was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Approximately two hours later, a 67-year-old man fishing at 500 East 30th Street was also attacked. He succumbed to his injuries shortly after being taken to Bellevue Hospital.

The spree continued at 10:55 a.m., when a 36-year-old woman was stabbed near the U.N. at East 42nd Street and First Avenue. Rivera reportedly stole her purse during the assault. She was transported to New York Presbyterian Hospital in critical condition but later died due to her injuries.

Witnesses and Arrest

An Uber driver, who witnessed the third stabbing, attempted to intervene. He followed Rivera up First Avenue, urging him to stop.

“I’m walking with him, I’m saying ‘drop it man, it’s not worth it,'” said witness Baha Biten, recalling his efforts to warn the suspect and alert pedestrians.

Veteran NYPD Officer Robert Garvey, who was nearby, quickly responded to the scene. After stopping Rivera at East 46th Street and First Avenue, Garvey searched his belongings and found two knives, one of which was covered in blood. Rivera was taken into custody without further incident.

Suspect’s Background

Rivera is believed to be homeless and a resident of the Bellevue men’s shelter on East 30th Street. Police noted that he was found with blood-stained clothing at the time of his arrest.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams addressed the case, emphasizing the need for systemic support for individuals with severe mental health challenges.

“This tragedy highlights the importance of addressing mental health issues proactively and effectively,” Adams said.

Community Impact

The Manhattan stabbing spree has left the city shaken, with many calling for increased security and support for vulnerable populations. Rivera’s arrest has brought some relief to residents, but the senseless violence has sparked renewed conversations about public safety and mental health resources.

Rivera remains in custody as the investigation continues.
