A man in Pennsylvania is under questioning in connection with the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, a crime that has sent shockwaves through the corporate world and law enforcement. Thompson, 52, was ambushed and killed at 6:44 a.m. last week outside the Hilton in Midtown Manhattan as he arrived for his company’s annual investor conference.
Tracking the Killer
The shooter used a 9 mm pistol, a firearm similar to those used by farmers to euthanize animals without loud noise. Investigators noted chilling details, including ammunition found at the scene etched with the words “delay,” “deny,” and “depose,” mimicking a phrase often used by critics of the insurance industry.
Thanks to extensive surveillance footage, police have retraced the suspect’s movements. After the shooting, the gunman fled into Central Park on a bicycle, which he abandoned near 85th Street around 7 a.m. He then walked a few blocks and took a taxi to the George Washington Bridge Bus Station. Surveillance footage places him there at 7:30 a.m., but authorities have not yet confirmed whether he boarded a bus or exited the station.
The suspect was reportedly in Manhattan for ten days before the killing, arriving on a Greyhound bus from Atlanta. It remains unclear whether he boarded the bus in Atlanta or at one of the stops along the route. Upon arriving, he took a cab directly to the Hilton’s vicinity, staying in the area for about 30 minutes.
That night, he traveled to the HI New York City Hostel by taxi. In a critical breakthrough for investigators, the suspect briefly pulled down his mask while speaking with a hostel employee, offering a glimpse of his face. This image is now pivotal in identifying him.
A Targeted Attack?
Chief investigator Richard Kenny noted the premeditated nature of the attack. “The shooter’s awareness of the investor conference and Thompson’s likely route suggests a possible motive tied to the company,” he said. Police are exploring the theory that the suspect could be a disgruntled employee or a dissatisfied client, given the precision of the ambush and the symbolic markings on the ammunition.
The Manhunt Continues
Investigators are working tirelessly to trace the suspect’s movements beyond the bus station. Surveillance footage from various transit hubs and potential escape routes is being analyzed, and authorities have released composite sketches based on the image captured at the hostel.
While a man in Pennsylvania is being questioned, no charges have been filed. Sources say the individual may have connections to the suspect or possess critical information about his whereabouts.
