An FBI raid on a multi-million dollar mansion in Aventura, Florida, has uncovered connections to a sprawling transnational cocaine trafficking organization allegedly run by a former Olympian. The raid, which took place Wednesday at 3914 Island Estates Drive, is part of a coordinated effort to dismantle a large-scale drug operation spanning multiple countries.
Kristi Hawkins, FBI special agent in charge of the Los Angeles Field Office, confirmed during a Thursday media briefing that one arrest was made at the Aventura property. The home belongs to Nahim Jorge Bonilla, a 36-year-old Miami Beach restaurateur and music executive. Bonilla, now in custody at the Miami Federal Detention Center, is among 16 individuals named in the indictment targeting the group’s leader.
The alleged head of the operation, Ryan James Wedding, 43, is a former member of the Canadian snowboarding team who competed in the 2002 Winter Olympics. According to Martin Estrada, U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California, Wedding chose a life of crime following his athletic career, becoming a major drug trafficker. “He chose to become a major drug trafficker and he chose to become a killer,” Estrada said. The FBI has linked the organization to the murder of at least four people, including a Canadian couple killed in front of their child.
The organization is believed to have smuggled over 60 tons of cocaine annually into the United States and Canada, primarily sourcing the drugs from Colombia and routing them through Mexico. From Mexico, long-haul truckers transported the drugs to stash houses in Los Angeles, where they were then distributed across the U.S. and Canada. The FBI highlighted the use of cryptocurrency wallets for laundering proceeds, with more than $3 million found in a single wallet.
Arrests related to the operation were made in several countries, including the U.S., Colombia, Mexico, and Canada. While 12 members of the organization have been apprehended, four remain at large, including Wedding. The FBI is offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to his capture, urging anyone with knowledge of his whereabouts to contact their tip line.
Wedding’s second-in-command, Andrew Clark, 34, was arrested by Mexican authorities earlier this month. The Justice Department identified Hardeep Ratte, 45, and Gurpreet Singh, 30, as managing the group’s drug transport operations in Canada. The investigation into the trafficking organization involved collaboration between the FBI, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the Los Angeles Police Department, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and law enforcement in Mexico and Colombia.
Bonilla, co-owner of Miami Beach restaurant Mandrake, purchased the Aventura mansion with Canadian businessman Simon Librati in 2020 for $4.8 million from record producer DJ Khaled. While Librati has not been named in the indictment, the investigation into the case is ongoing, and further updates are expected as more details emerge.
