October 14, 2024 — The community of Corydon Central High School is grieving the tragic death of Bryce Gerlach, an 18-year-old student who was fatally shot in a senseless act of violence near the Harvest Homecoming Festival in New Albany, Indiana on Saturday night.

Innocent Bystanders Targeted

According to New Albany Police Chief Todd Bailey, Bryce Gerlach and two others were innocent bystanders caught in the crossfire of a shooting near the popular festival, which draws thousands of attendees each year. The shooting occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning, just blocks from the heart of the festival.

Gerlach, who was described as a bright and promising young man by friends and family, tragically lost his life in the attack. Two others sustained injuries and were taken to the hospital for treatment. Authorities are still investigating the incident but have not yet made any arrests.

A Community in Mourning

Corydon Central High School released a statement expressing their deep sorrow over the loss of Bryce, noting his positive impact on the school and wider community. “Bryce was an outstanding student and a friend to many. During a Sunday morning press conference, Chief Bailey provided more details on the ongoing investigation, condemning the violence that took place. “This was a senseless act that took the life of a young man with so much potential,” Bailey said.

The police are continuing to urge anyone with information regarding the shooting to come forward. Authorities are working to ensure the safety of the community and are exploring every lead to apprehend those responsible.
