A Chicago police officer was fatally shot during a traffic stop on Monday night in the East Chatham neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side. Authorities reported that the shooting unfolded at around 8 p.m. near Ingleside Avenue and East 82nd Street, after officers pulled over a vehicle with three individuals inside. The officer, who was later identified as 26 years old and had served with the Chicago Police Department for nearly three years, was struck multiple times by gunfire and later pronounced dead at the University of Chicago Medical Center.
The incident began when Chicago police officers conducted a routine traffic stop. As they approached the vehicle, rapid gunfire erupted from one of the occupants, hitting the officer multiple times, according to Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling. “I come to you with a heavy heart because we’ve lost another police officer who was out working, attempting to protect the city and was tragically taken away from us by gunfire,” Snelling stated at a press briefing early Tuesday.
The officer’s name has not yet been publicly disclosed out of respect for the family, but Snelling shared a few details about the young officer’s character and dedication. “He was a proud individual, very hardworking, and he gave his life for this city,” Snelling remarked. “There’s a family grieving. Please keep the family in your thoughts and prayers because this is harder than anyone knows, having someone taken suddenly from you like that.”
During the shooting, another occupant of the vehicle was also struck by gunfire and later died from their injuries. Police found a handgun on this individual. The suspect responsible for shooting the officer attempted to flee the scene but was soon apprehended after abandoning the vehicle and trying to escape on foot. According to authorities, at least one other officer discharged their firearm during the confrontation.
Investigators reported that a second weapon, equipped with an extended magazine, was found at the scene. Chicago’s Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) was called to investigate the incident, as is standard procedure in police-involved shootings. COPA has urged anyone with additional information to contact them at 312-746-3609 or through their website.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson expressed condolences and called for community solidarity in the wake of the officer’s death. “This tragic loss cuts deep,” he said. “The wound is severe. The only way we’ll get through this tragic loss is if we put our arms around one another, recognizing the value and bravery of our police department who put their lives on the line for us every day.”
The Chicago Police Department, the city’s leaders, and the community now grieve the loss of a young officer who dedicated his life to public service. Flags across the city will be lowered, and a memorial for the officer is expected in the coming days as Chicago remembers his sacrifice.
