NYC Weather Alert: Coastal Flood Advisory for Manhattan and Staten Island on Friday

ClimateNYC Weather Alert: Coastal Flood Advisory for Manhattan and Staten Island on Friday

A coastal flood advisory has been issued for Manhattan and Staten Island, warning residents of potential flooding conditions on Friday. The National Weather Service (NWS) has alerted that rising tides and gusty winds could create hazardous conditions along the coastlines, especially during high tide periods.

The advisory is set to take effect early Friday morning and will remain in place through the evening, as tides are expected to peak. Forecasters warn that low-lying areas near the waterfront, including piers, coastal roads, and parks, could experience flooding due to elevated water levels.

“Minor coastal flooding is expected along vulnerable shorelines,” the NWS stated. Residents are advised to avoid parking vehicles in low-lying areas and to use caution when traveling through areas prone to flooding. The advisory urges people to remain alert to changing conditions and be prepared for potential water pooling on roadways.

Staten Island and Manhattan’s waterfront neighborhoods could be most affected, including areas like Battery Park, South Beach, and Midland Beach. Residents living near these zones should prepare for possible road closures and disruptions due to water overflow.

The advisory comes as weather patterns bring increased moisture and onshore winds to the region, driving up water levels along the New York City coastline. The NWS notes that even minor coastal flooding can cause significant inconvenience, especially in densely populated areas like Manhattan.

In addition to the flood risks, the advisory warns of rough surf conditions, making it unsafe for swimming or boating along the affected shorelines. High waves could pose a danger to anyone venturing too close to the water’s edge.

City officials are closely monitoring the situation and have encouraged residents to stay informed through local news updates and weather alerts. Emergency services are prepared to respond if conditions worsen, and residents are reminded to follow any safety instructions or evacuation orders issued by authorities.

New Yorkers are encouraged to take necessary precautions, such as securing outdoor items, moving valuables to higher ground, and staying clear of flooded areas. Those in coastal neighborhoods should be especially vigilant as high tide times approach on Friday.

While the advisory indicates only minor flooding at this time, residents should be prepared for rapidly changing conditions and stay tuned for any updates from the National Weather Service.
