Sally Struthers Reflects on Alleged ‘Fat-Shaming’ by Betty White

CelebritySally Struthers Reflects on Alleged ‘Fat-Shaming’ by Betty White

Veteran actress Sally Struthers has revealed a personal experience where she felt “fat-shamed” by the late Betty White, describing her as “a very passive-aggressive woman.” Struthers, known for her role on All in the Family, shared her thoughts during a recent interview, recounting the moment and its lasting impact.

While Struthers did not specify when the incident occurred, she described it as an uncomfortable and unexpected interaction. “She said something that, at first, seemed innocent,” Struthers recalled, “but it was one of those comments that hit you later, and you realize, ‘Wait, was that an insult?’”

The actress, now in her 70s, admitted the comment stayed with her over the years, adding, “Betty had this way of delivering lines that could cut, but always with a smile. It was her charm, but it didn’t always land well.”

Complicated Feelings About a Beloved Star
Struthers acknowledged White’s legendary status in Hollywood, particularly her beloved role as Rose Nylund on The Golden Girls. “Betty was incredibly talented, and she brought so much joy to people, including me. But she wasn’t perfect. None of us are.”

Despite the incident, Struthers expressed admiration for other members of The Golden Girls cast, notably sharing her affection for Rue McClanahan. “Rue was a gem. She had this warmth about her, both on and off the screen. She always made you feel like you were the most important person in the room.”

Betty White’s Legacy Remains Untouched
Struthers’ comments come as a rare critique of White, who passed away in December 2021 at the age of 99. Known for her sharp wit and groundbreaking roles, White remains one of television’s most cherished figures.

In addressing her remarks, Struthers emphasized she held no grudge against White, stating, “It was one moment in a lifetime of memories. I know how much she meant to people, and I respect that. I just think it’s okay to acknowledge that even the brightest stars have their shadows.”

A Broader Conversation
Struthers’ revelation has sparked conversations online about body image and the pressures of Hollywood, particularly for women. Many fans have praised her for speaking openly about her experience, while others have expressed surprise at hearing a negative anecdote about the otherwise universally adored White.
