A Powerball ticket worth a staggering $478.2 million was sold in metro Atlanta, marking one of the largest lottery wins in the state’s history. The winning ticket was drawn on Wednesday night, and it matched all six numbers required to take home the enormous jackpot. The Georgia Lottery announced the news early Thursday morning, confirming that the lucky ticket was purchased at a local retailer in the Atlanta metropolitan area.

The winning numbers for the jackpot were 12, 27, 31, 45, 66, with a Powerball number of 23. The ticket holder has yet to come forward, but they have the option of taking a lump sum payment estimated at around $220 million after taxes, or receiving the full $478.2 million through an annuity paid over 30 years.

Lottery officials have urged the winner to sign the back of the ticket immediately, store it in a safe place, and seek legal and financial advice before claiming the prize. “We are thrilled to have another big Powerball winner in Georgia. This is a life-changing amount of money, and we want the winner to take their time and make the right decisions for their future,” said Gretchen Corbin, President and CEO of the Georgia Lottery Corporation.

The win has generated a buzz across the state, with many local residents checking their tickets and dreaming of what they might do with such a windfall. The retailer that sold the ticket will also receive a bonus commission of $50,000, adding to the excitement surrounding the big win. Store owner Raj Patel said he was overwhelmed when he heard the news. “I couldn’t believe it when they told me. I’m just happy for whoever won it, and I hope they do something good with the money,” he said.

This jackpot marks the first time since 2021 that a Powerball jackpot winner has emerged from Georgia. It is also the fourth-largest Powerball prize won in the state’s history. The record for the largest jackpot ever won in Georgia remains a $648 million Mega Millions prize, split between two winners in 2013.

The $478.2 million jackpot had been rolling over for weeks, fueling a surge in ticket sales as the prize grew. Powerball jackpots accumulate when there is no winner in each drawing, allowing the prize pool to grow rapidly. The odds of winning the jackpot are approximately 1 in 292 million, making Wednesday’s win a particularly rare stroke of luck.

Lottery experts say that the new winner’s anonymity may not last long, despite Georgia being one of the states where winners can remain anonymous. “It’s a lot of money, and people tend to come forward eventually, even if they want to stay out of the spotlight initially,” said David Carter, a lottery analyst.

As the new winner prepares to claim their prize, many across Georgia are celebrating the local connection to the massive jackpot. The news has brought a sense of excitement to the metro Atlanta area, as residents eagerly wait to learn the identity of the newest multimillionaire in their midst.
