Comedian and actress Kate McKinnon, best known for her hilarious impressions on Saturday Night Live (SNL), is stepping into a new role—author. McKinnon recently announced the release of her first children’s novel, Dork Diaries: New Kid on the Block, inspired by her own experience of feeling out of place growing up. The book centers on a young girl navigating the trials and tribulations of being a newcomer in a quirky school environment.

“I was a total dork,” she laughs, reminiscing about her own school days. “I didn’t fit in. So, in a way, this book is my love letter to all the kids who feel like they don’t belong. I want them to know that being different is actually their superpower.”

The novel, slated for release next spring, blends humor with heartfelt moments, capturing McKinnon’s trademark wit. It’s already generating buzz among parents and educators who appreciate its message of self-acceptance and resilience.

From Classroom to ‘SNL’ Fame

Before her rise to fame, McKinnon was far from the confident performer we know today. She recalls her school years as being tough, feeling more comfortable playing with her cat than with her classmates. But those early experiences ultimately shaped her comedic voice. “I learned to embrace my weirdness, and comedy became my outlet,” she shares.

Her journey eventually led to a successful stint on SNL, where she spent over a decade delivering iconic performances and winning two Emmy Awards. With SNL gearing up for its 50th anniversary, McKinnon expressed gratitude for the role the show played in her career.

“SNL gave me a platform to try new things and be completely fearless,” she notes. “It’s surreal to see the show hitting this huge milestone. I’m thrilled to see what the next 50 years will bring.”

What’s Next for McKinnon?

Aside from her book, McKinnon is also working on several new comedy projects and hinted at a possible return to SNL for special anniversary episodes. “Who knows? I might pop in,” she teased. As for advice to young readers, she keeps it simple: “Just be yourself. The world needs more of you.”
