A major egg recall has been issued by Costco after over 10,000 cartons of Kirkland Signature Organic Eggs were found to be potentially contaminated with salmonella. The recall, which affects five states, includes eggs sold under the Kirkland brand at Costco locations.
Details of the Recall
The recalled eggs, produced by Handsome Brook Farms, were sold in Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, Ohio, and Virginia. Consumers who purchased these eggs are being urged to check the packaging for affected lot numbers and return the products for a refund or replacement.
The recall affects organic, free-range eggs in cartons of 12 with specific use-by dates ranging from September 27 to October 9, 2024.
Health Concerns
The recall comes after concerns that the eggs may be contaminated with Salmonella Enteritidis, a bacteria that can cause severe gastrointestinal illness. Symptoms of salmonella infection include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and fever. These symptoms can be especially dangerous for young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.
What Consumers Should Do
If you have purchased the affected eggs, it is strongly advised that you discard the product immediately. You can also return the eggs to Costco for a full refund. Costco has posted a recall notice in all affected stores and on its website.
Other Affected Products
The recall also includes a separate salmonella issue with cucumbers, which have been recalled alongside the eggs in an effort to prevent further health risks.
What You Can Do
Consumers who have these eggs at home should contact Costco for more information or visit the retailer’s official website to learn more about the recall. Additionally, it is advised to follow all food safety guidelines, including cooking eggs thoroughly to reduce the risk of salmonella.
As always, if you suspect you may have consumed contaminated eggs and are feeling unwell, it’s important to seek medical attention promptly.
