Ryan McCartan, known for his breakout role in Disney Channel’s Liv & Maddie and his successful Broadway career, is set to take over as Jay Gatsby in the Broadway musical The Great Gatsby. McCartan will step into the role starting January 21, 2025, succeeding Jeremy Jordan, who originated the part in the production’s Broadway run.
The change comes as The Great Gatsby prepares to celebrate the centennial of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel. A special benefit performance on January 16, 2025, will mark the start of a year-long celebration in partnership with The New York Public Library. Jordan will headline the gala performance alongside Eva Noblezada at The Broadway Theatre, with proceeds benefiting The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. The evening will conclude with a Gatsby-inspired soiree at the library, serving as a farewell to Jordan before McCartan takes the reins.
While Jordan’s next steps remain undisclosed, industry speculation suggests a significant announcement from the actor later this week.
McCartan’s theatrical pedigree makes him a fitting successor. He made his New York stage debut in Heathers The Musical, originating the role of JD, which earned him acclaim and a feature on the Original Cast Recording. He later dazzled audiences as Fiyero in Wicked and Hans in Disney’s Frozen. McCartan’s other notable credits include Tony in West Side Story at the Lyric Opera of Chicago and a starring role in Randy Newman’s Faust: The Concert.
In addition to his stage work, McCartan has built an impressive resume in film and television. His credits include Kenny Ortega’s The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Emma’s Chance for Sony Pictures, and roles in series such as The Winchesters, Last Man Standing, and The Middle.
The Great Gatsby, directed by Marc Bruni with choreography by Dominique Kelley, features music and lyrics by Jason Howland and Nathan Tysen, and a book by Kait Kerrigan. The musical debuted on Broadway on March 29, 2024, with its official opening on April 25, 2024. Produced by Chunsoo Shin, the show has been praised for its lush staging and evocative adaptation of Fitzgerald’s iconic story.
