Mississippi College, a private Christian university in Clinton, has announced significant changes, including a name change and the elimination of its football program. The decision was confirmed by the Mississippi College Board of Trustees in a statement released on Monday.
Name Change and Institutional Shift
The university will now be known as Mississippi Christian University. According to the board, this change reflects the institution’s growth as a comprehensive university, which will allow it to retain its “MC” logo and brand identity. The new name also aligns with the university’s Christian mission and its vision for the future.
Blake Thompson, President of Mississippi College, emphasized that the changes were designed to secure the institution’s future. “These transformational and necessary changes are extremely important to the future of this institution,” said Thompson. “As we look ahead to the institution’s bicentennial in 2026, we want to ensure that MC will be a university recognized for academic excellence and commitment to the cause of Christ for another 200 years.”
Football Program Cut to Focus on Other Sports
The most notable change involves the discontinuation of Mississippi College’s football program. The decision to end the program was made in order to focus resources on its remaining 17 sports and to enhance facilities for Division II play. The university’s athletic department plans to realign its focus on supporting these other sports programs.
“We acknowledge the program’s legacy and the deep connection to the many student-athletes, alumni, and supporters of the football program,” said MC Athletic Director Kenny Bizot. “We will always consider them as part of our MC Family.”
The discontinuation of the football program will allow the university to allocate more resources toward these other sports and strengthen its overall athletic offerings. MC officials assured that they will assist current student-athletes in continuing their education at the university or finding opportunities to transfer.
Academic Reorganization and New Structure
As part of the university’s broader strategic realignment, Mississippi College will also undergo academic reorganization. The School of Christian Studies and the Arts will merge with the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, while the School of Education will be renamed the School of Education and Human Science.
These structural changes are designed to enhance the academic offerings and ensure the university remains competitive and relevant as it approaches its 200th anniversary.
