Cade Klubnik’s electrifying 50-yard touchdown run with just 1:16 remaining on the clock propelled No. 20 Clemson to a dramatic 24-20 comeback victory over Pitt on Saturday. The clutch play not only sealed the win but may have salvaged Clemson’s season, as the Tigers remain in the hunt for a strong finish in the ACC.

In a game that was tightly contested from start to finish, Klubnik’s heroics came when Clemson needed them the most. With Pitt taking a narrow 20-17 lead after a late field goal, the Tigers found themselves with their backs against the wall and just 1:36 left in regulation. But Klubnik, demonstrating composure beyond his years, orchestrated a rapid and decisive response.

Starting from their own 25-yard line, Klubnik wasted no time getting the Tigers down the field. On the third play of the drive, after connecting with Antonio Williams for an 18-yard gain and a quick 7-yard pass to tight end Jake Briningstool, Klubnik called his own number on what was initially designed as a QB draw with receivers running stick routes. The sophomore quarterback saw an opening and took full advantage, sprinting 50 yards untouched to the end zone, sending Memorial Stadium into a frenzy.

Klubnik’s game-winning run was a testament to his athleticism and game awareness, turning what appeared to be a conservative play call into a season-defining moment. The Tigers’ sideline erupted as Klubnik crossed the goal line, knowing that their hopes for a strong finish in the conference were kept alive by his late-game heroics.

“It was a QB draw all the way,” Klubnik said after the game. “The receivers were running stick routes to pull the defenders away, and the line did a great job giving me a lane. Once I saw it, I just took off.”

Pitt had taken the lead earlier in the fourth quarter with a methodical drive that resulted in a go-ahead field goal, putting pressure on Clemson to deliver in the clutch. The Panthers’ defense had done well to contain Clemson for most of the game, but they had no answer for Klubnik’s final burst of speed.

Before his game-winning run, Klubnik had shown resilience despite facing a tough Pitt defense that disrupted Clemson’s rhythm throughout the game. The Tigers’ offense struggled to find its groove early, but Klubnik’s poise in the final minutes proved to be the difference. He finished the game with a solid stat line, showcasing not only his passing ability but also his dual-threat capabilities on the ground.

Clemson’s defense also played a crucial role in keeping the game within reach, especially during the second half when they limited Pitt to just two field goals after halftime. Defensive end Xavier Thomas led the charge with multiple pressures on Pitt quarterback Christian Veilleux, forcing hurried throws and keeping the Tigers within striking distance.

With the victory, Clemson improves to 8-2 on the season, bolstering their position in the ACC standings as they eye a strong finish to the season. Coach Dabo Swinney praised Klubnik’s leadership, particularly his ability to remain calm under pressure. “Cade showed what it means to be a leader today,” Swinney said. “He put the team on his back when we needed it most.”

Pitt, meanwhile, falls to 6-4, with the loss all but ending their hopes of a conference championship game appearance. The Panthers had opportunities to seal the game but could not overcome Klubnik’s late-game magic.

Clemson will look to carry this momentum into their next matchup, as they continue to push for a top-tier bowl game. With Klubnik proving he can deliver in the clutch, the Tigers remain a dangerous team as the season winds down.
