In a significant shift from its flexible work policies, Amazon has announced that employees will be required to return to the office five days a week starting January 2, 2024. The change, conveyed in a message from CEO Andy Jassy, is part of the company’s efforts to foster greater collaboration and productivity through in-person work.
This new Return to Office (RTO) policy marks a departure from the hybrid model many Amazon employees had become accustomed to since the company, like many others, shifted to remote work during the pandemic. Initially, Amazon had allowed employees to work remotely or on a hybrid schedule, but Jassy emphasized that in-person collaboration is crucial for Amazon’s long-term success.
“Being in the office five days a week will allow us to strengthen our team connections and enhance the innovation that has driven our growth,” said Jassy in the announcement. He acknowledged the challenges employees might face with the transition but reiterated that the company believes in-person work is essential to maintain Amazon’s competitive edge.
The news has sparked mixed reactions among Amazon’s workforce, with some employees questioning the necessity of the 5-day RTO when remote work had been successful for many teams. However, Amazon remains firm in its stance, stressing the importance of face-to-face interactions and on-site presence to drive efficiency.
As the January 2 deadline approaches, Amazon joins a growing list of major tech companies returning to pre-pandemic office norms.
