CelebrityMarianne Faithfull, Iconic Singer and Actress, Dies at 78

London, UK – Legendary singer, songwriter, and actress Marianne Faithfull has died at the age of 78, her family confirmed in a statement earlier today. Faithfull, best known for her haunting rendition of “As Tears Go By”, had a career spanning six decades, leaving an indelible mark on music, film, and pop culture.

Cause of Death

While an official cause of death has not yet been disclosed, Faithfull’s health struggles in recent years were well known. She battled COVID-19 in 2020, which left her with long-term complications, and had previously suffered from pneumonia, hepatitis C, and a history of substance abuse.

From 1960s Starlet to Rock Royalty

Faithfull was discovered at just 17 years old by Rolling Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham, who helped launch her career with the release of “As Tears Go By”, a song written by Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and Oldham himself. The melancholic ballad became one of her signature songs, charting in both the UK and the US.

Faithfull quickly became a fixture of London’s swinging ‘60s scene, known for her high-profile romance with Mick Jagger and her close connections with music and film royalty. But by the 1970s, she had spiraled into drug addiction and homelessness, a battle she would openly discuss in later years.

A Career Rebirth

In the late 1970s and beyond, Faithfull made a stunning comeback with the album “Broken English” (1979), which showcased her deep, raspy voice—forever altered by years of hard living. Songs like “The Ballad of Lucy Jordan” and “Why’d Ya Do It” cemented her as a punk-influenced rock poet, distinct from her delicate early sound.

She continued releasing acclaimed albums, including “Strange Weather” (1987), “Before the Poison” (2004), and “Negative Capability” (2018). Faithfull also ventured into acting, appearing in films like “Marie Antoinette” (2006) and “Irina Palm” (2007).

Tributes Pour In

Following the news of her passing, Mick Jagger led tributes to his former partner, calling her “a true original, with a voice and spirit like no other.” Other music icons, including Keith Richards, Patti Smith, and Nick Cave, also shared heartfelt messages, praising Faithfull’s resilience and artistic brilliance.

Faithfull is survived by her son, Nicholas Dunbar, and leaves behind a legacy of music, rebellion, and reinvention.
