President Donald Trump is facing criticism after suggesting that diversity, equity, and inclusion (D.E.I.) policies and the Biden administration’s leadership contributed to a recent aviation disaster. Speaking at a campaign event, Trump claimed—without evidence—that the crash was linked to hiring practices and regulations implemented under President Joe Biden.
“They’re not hiring the best people,” Trump said, referring to federal agencies and the airline industry. “They’re focused on things like D.E.I. instead of safety. This is what happens when you put politics over competence.”
His remarks quickly ignited backlash from Democrats, aviation experts, and civil rights organizations, who accused him of using a tragedy to push partisan narratives. Critics noted that the crash occurred under existing federal aviation safety regulations, many of which remained unchanged since his own administration.
Aviation Experts Dispute Trump’s Claims
Experts dismissed Trump’s assertions, pointing to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) as agencies with longstanding safety protocols that prioritize experience and qualifications in aviation hiring.

The Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) also responded, stating that all pilots undergo extensive training and testing before certification.

The Biden White House dismissed Trump’s accusations as political fearmongering. Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre called his comments “irresponsible and divisive,” emphasizing that aviation safety remains a top priority for the administration.
“We have the safest aviation system in the world,” Jean-Pierre said. “Tragedies like this should not be used for political attacks.”
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg echoed this, calling Trump’s statements a distraction from real safety discussions.
