The Dallas Cowboys and head coach Mike McCarthy have mutually agreed to part ways following a breakdown in contract negotiations. McCarthy, whose contract expired at the end of the 2024 season, will not return as head coach for the upcoming year, according to sources confirmed by Yahoo Sports’ Jori Epstein.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones issued a statement confirming the decision, highlighting a joint review of the past season and discussions about the team’s future. “Over the past week, Mike and I had the opportunity to conduct a joint review of all aspects of the past season, our players and staff, and also spent considerable time discussing the road forward for the team,” Jones shared. “Prior to reaching the point of contract negotiations, though, it became mutually clear that it would be better for each of us to head in a different direction. We will commence a search process immediately to hire the next head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.”
The decision comes after the two sides were reportedly unable to agree on the length of McCarthy’s contract, as first reported by NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. This development follows the Cowboys’ refusal to grant the Chicago Bears permission to interview McCarthy for their head coaching vacancy, suggesting that negotiations were ongoing at the time. Now a free agent, McCarthy is free to explore the Bears’ position or other opportunities, provided mutual interest remains.
McCarthy’s tenure with the Cowboys had its ups and downs, with the team finishing the 2024 season at 7-10. The season saw a mix of triumphs and disappointments, including a resurgence midseason when the Cowboys won four out of five games to recover from a 3-7 start. However, the team faltered with two consecutive losses to close the season, including a crushing 41-7 defeat to division rivals, the Philadelphia Eagles, in Week 17. This loss also marked a standout moment for Eagles running back Saquon Barkley, who surpassed 2,000 rushing yards for the season.
McCarthy, who joined the Cowboys in 2020, helped guide the team to three playoff appearances during his tenure. Despite flashes of success, the team consistently fell short of advancing past the divisional round, leading to mounting frustration among fans and stakeholders.
As the Cowboys begin their search for a new head coach, speculation will mount about potential candidates to take the reins in Dallas. Meanwhile, McCarthy, with his experience and a Super Bowl championship to his name, is likely to attract interest from other franchises in need of a seasoned leader.
