Texans Eye Receiver Options After Tank Dell’s Injury: Top Three Candidates

Fast NewsTexans Eye Receiver Options After Tank Dell's Injury: Top Three Candidates

The Houston Texans are assessing their options at wide receiver after rookie standout Tank Dell sustained a season-ending injury in Week 16. Dell, a key component of the Texans’ passing game, suffered a fractured fibula during a critical divisional matchup against the Tennessee Titans. With playoffs still within reach, the Texans are actively exploring ways to bolster their receiving corps.

Head coach DeMeco Ryans confirmed the team’s plans to address the loss. “We’re exploring everything,” Ryans said in a press conference Monday. “We’re confident in the guys we have, but we’re also looking at every opportunity to strengthen our group.”

1. Free Agent Signings

One immediate option for the Texans is dipping into the pool of free-agent receivers. Veteran wideouts like Julio Jones or T.Y. Hilton could provide experience and stability for the Texans’ offense. While Jones is past his prime, his physicality and leadership could complement the Texans’ younger talent. Hilton, known for his speed and route-running, could offer quarterback C.J. Stroud a reliable target.

2. Practice Squad Elevations

The Texans may also promote from within by elevating a player from their practice squad. Jalen Camp and Steven Sims are among the potential candidates. Sims, who has NFL experience with the Washington Commanders and Pittsburgh Steelers, brings versatility as a receiver and return specialist. This route allows the team to maintain continuity without making drastic roster changes.

3. Trade Possibilities

While less common at this point in the season, trades are not entirely off the table. The Texans could target a receiver from a team out of playoff contention. Such a move would depend on salary cap considerations and the willingness of opposing teams to part with assets.

Moving Forward Without Dell

Dell, a third-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, had emerged as one of Stroud’s favorite targets, racking up 1,120 receiving yards and eight touchdowns. His absence leaves a void in Houston’s offense, particularly in stretching the field and creating separation.

In Dell’s stead, Nico Collins and Robert Woods are expected to take on larger roles, while rookie Xavier Hutchinson could see increased opportunities. Stroud, who has been having a sensational rookie campaign, will need to adapt quickly to the evolving receiver lineup.

The Texans, currently 8-7, are in the thick of the AFC wild-card race. With pivotal games ahead, addressing their receiver depth will be critical to their playoff hopes. Whether through free agency, internal promotions, or trades, the team’s next steps could define their postseason push.
