A resolution defining marriage as being between one man and one woman has been tabled by the Sioux City council in order to review whether it would open up the city to litigation.
City Attorney Andrew Mai told the council it does not have the legal authority to pass the mostly symbolic resolution.
Councilman Brent Hoffman said the move might not have much impact on marriage, as the state has authority in that realm, but it would direct city departments, boards and commissions to stay in line with the council’s position.
It could be several months before the issue is brought back before the council.
