Immigration reform, not an economic stimulus package or job creation bill, is the first step the government should take in order to help millions of Americans who are out of work, according to a guest column in The Des Moines Register by Fifth District Congressman Steve King, R-Kiron.
King cites a study by the Pew Hispanic Center that estimates 7 million jobs in this country are held by undocumented workers. With 9.5 million Americans without jobs, the solution is simple.
Enforcement actions against employers, like the one in Postville, are a step in the right direction. But with so many people working illegally in the United States, we need new tools to enforce the law.
