In the first poll of the 2010 U.S. Senate election in Iowa, Sen. Chuck Grassley appears vulnerable to a possible challenge from former Gov. Tom Vilsack.

The poll, conducted by Research 2000 for Daily Kos, indicates that in a hypothetical matchup against Vilsack, Grassley leads by four percentage points — within the margin of error.

Grassley (R) 48

    Everyone:
Contact Senator Grassley and let him know that his grandstanding in the Senate yesterday regarding the auto industry bailout bill was an embarrassment and that he needs to think of the workers of America and stop trying to break the UAW! If you did not see him, he used a blow up cartoon picture of the Joker from Batman to discuss and oppose the bailout bill. The White House, including VP Cheney, had urged the GOP to support the bill, because even THEY realize to let the American auto industry to collapse will send this country, indeed the world, into a Depression like we never could imagine. They were happy to send the banking industry $700 billion without delay or strings, but now, they can't agree to help save an industry that is crucial for national security and means millions of jobs, not just UAW jobs either. No community in the United States will go without feeling the loss of the big three. In the Iowa City area we already had hundreds of UAW jobs lost this month due to the economic downturn. There is a big trickle down effect when these jobs are lost in every community. By letting these companies go bankrupt, the GOP Senators are willing to pull the rug out from under retirees and hard working Americans who livelihoods depend on that industry. The GOP, especially Senator Grassley, should be ashamed and we voters need to let them know this will not be forgotten. BTW- Senator Shelby and others in the GOP that were the leaders of this fight, have foreign car companies in their states, states that gave those foreign companies billions in tax breaks to locate in their states…
