Principal laying off 300 Des Moines workers

By Jason Hancock | 12.09.08 | 6:29 pm

Principal Financial Group Inc. announced today that it will eliminate 550 jobs, including 300 in its Des Moines headquarters.

The company’s senior vice president for human resources, Mary O’Keefe, said the employees whose positions have been eliminated will receive severance pay and career assistance.

“The most difficult decision business leaders ever have to make is the decision to eliminate jobs,” O’Keefe, said in a prepared statement. “Since September when market conditions worsened, we have been continuously reviewing expenses and expected revenues. In order to bring expenses more in line with projected revenues, we have already cut many expenses. Unfortunately, this must include eliminating some jobs.”

The Des Moines-based insurance and financial services company employs more than 16,000 people worldwide and 8,000 in Central Iowa.

This doesn't surprise me. More corporate mismanagement by Principal. They turned down millions from the state to create jobs in Des Moines, but want $2 billion dollars from the Federal Government in the bailouts. I saw where Jim Cramer from “Mad Money” thinks Principal is a real turkey. I have to agree.

Principal Financial Group is horrible. They used to own the company my old financial advisor worked for. It was Delaware Valley Financial Advisors. Principal took all my private information from my advisor. For four days he couldn't get access to MY information. I switched after that. The stories my advisor told were shocking. Apparently, Principal had armed guards stationed to keep my financial advisor from getting all his clients' information.
