Tom Harkin is teaming up with Barack Obama in the U.S. Senate on legislation that would establish new low-carbon fuel standards.
According to Sen. Harkin, the legislation would require a reduction of approximately 180 million metric tons of carbon emissions by the year 2020.
Sen. Harkin and Sen. Obama are the co-sponsors of the National Low Carbon Fuel Standard Act of 2007 that was introduced in the Senate on Monday.
The "Harkin-Obama Fuel Standard" would provide incentives to encourage lower carbon emissions during the production of renewable fuels.
According to Sen. Obama's staff, the fuel standards would "embrace the growth of the renewable fuels market, including corn-based ethanol, cellulosic ethanol, and biodiesel as a key component of fighting climate change"
One key component of the bill is the fact that it would require that the expansion of renewable fuel production methods do not impact national wildlife refuges, national parks or national forests, old-growth forests or national grasslands.
