Clinton Announces International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Endorsement

By Garance Franke-Ruta | 08.30.07 | 10:50 am

Not to be outdone by Sen. Chris Dodd’s day-long International Association of Fire Fighters endorsement announcement tour in Iowa, Sen. Hillary Clinton’s campaign today announced an endorsement by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers.

The statement from the Clinton campaign:

The Clinton Campaign today announced the endorsement of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. The IAM is among the nation’s largest industrial trade unions, representing over 700,000 active and retired members in airline, aerospace, manufacturing, railroad, woodworking and shipbuilding industries, and is a member of the AFL-CIO.

“Hillary Clinton earned the IAM’s endorsement by focusing on jobs, health care, education and trade – the bread and butter issues of the American middle class,” said IAM International President Tom Buffenbarger. “She is the only candidate of either party to come forward with a comprehensive manufacturing policy and the only candidate to connect with millions of Americans who feel invisible to the current administration.”

sad state of affairs for IAM I heard that the machinists endorsed both hillary and huckabee today. I know many machinists who are good people and great trade unionists and I would suspect that they too are scratching their heads right now saying WTF?!?!? Perhaps it is a sign of the times with many “business” minded union leaders at the healms in washington these days that such a great organization should be led down such a path. It is no bold statement of idealism to back the front-running democrat and then, to make certain your derrier is adequately covered, to also back a moderate appearing republican. I can only feel sadness in my heart for my brothers and sisters in that union who now must choose between publicly working to support a republican or the wife of the man who brought us NAFTA and yet today tours the nation and the world touting the wonders of globalization.

Wal-Mart Huckabee and Clinton did both get endorsements from the IAM today:

Buffenbarger also praised the former Arkansas Republican Governor, who addressed the IAM National Staff Conference this week. “Mike Huckabee was the only Republican candidate with the guts to meet with our members and the only one willing to figure out where and how we might work together,” said Buffenbarger. “He is entitled to serious consideration from our members voting in the upcoming Republican primaries.”

According to a recent survey of Machinists Union members, one-third votes Republican and two-thirds vote Democratic. “The dual endorsement is intended to involve all IAM members in the upcoming election,” said Buffenbarger. “It is fitting for the union whose early members gave birth to Labor Day to reach beyond traditional partisan boundaries to establish new relationships for the benefit of all working Americans.

This is interesting.  Huckabee and, to a somewhat lesser extent, Clinton are the two candidates closest tied to Wal-Mart, both having spent time in Arkansas, where Wal-Mart is headquartered.  I don't know what else connects the two candidates.
