Wayne Sawtelle, the IAFF’s political director in Iowa, contacted Iowa Independent Wednesday to confirm, “The state association will follow the international and will probably make that official tomorrow at the meeting.”
Claims began surfacing that IAFF locals might not follow their international Monday, when Iowa Independent spoke to Sawtelle, who at that point said he “hadn’t heard” whether Iowa firefighters would back Dodd.
Wednesday, Sawtelle said, “When I talked to you the other day, at that point, frankly, I knew that they were going to make the announcement.” But he did not want to let on that he knew, so he decided not to confirm that Iowa firefighters would support the Connecticut Sen. Although the Iowa organization is not bound to follow the IAFF’s official endorseement, Sawtelle made clear that at this point they are planning to do so.
