hang on a minute The firefighters' endorsement was certainly helpful to Kerry (I remember the signs in the crowd during the Jefferson-Jackson dinner in 2003), but it's going too far to say that endorsement was "credited with much of Kerry's eventual success in Iowa."

Kerry built a strong network of field organizers and precinct captains, which put him in a position to capitalize on the momentum swinging away from Dean toward the end. He made a decision to invest lots of resources into building this organization during the months when polls looked horrendous for him.

I think Kerry's tv ads during the final month of the campaign were good as well, particularly in comparison with the Dean and Gephardt ads.

I don't think the firefighters had nearly as much impact as those other factors.
